8 Simple Rules for Organising your home with ADHD tendencies.

Does anyone remember the show 8 Simple Rules (for dating my teenage daughter)? 🙋🏼‍♀️ It used to be on TV back when we used to read the paper to find out what time shows were on.

While these points will certainly assist those with ADHD, you don't need to be diagnosed with ADHD to benefit from the points on this list.

As you may know, our own Tamara Speedie has a degree in Psychological Science. However this list has been created based on the tips we share with our clients during their sessions, and the strategies we have helped implement to keep home organisation on track.

  1. Break tasks into smaller steps: Large organising projects can be overwhelming, so break them down into smaller, manageable steps. AI can help you do this, if needed.

  2. Make it pretty: Visual aids, such as colour-coded labels, sticky notes, and diagrams, can help you keep track of tasks/items, keep you more engaged and help you identify things faster.

  3. Set routines: Establish routines, such as making your bed every morning or doing laundry every Saturday, to create structure and reduce stress.

  4. Use timers: Use timers to help you stay on track and manage your time effectively. Our top recommendations here are the Pomodoro method or 15 minute time blocking.

  5. Reward yourself: Create a system of rewards for completing organisational tasks to incentivise yourself and maintain motivation. Utilise a visual aid from point 2 to keep you on track with this.

  6. Be flexible: Be open to changing your organizational methods if they are not working for you, and don't be afraid to seek new solutions.

  7. Celebrate successes: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small, to build confidence and motivation.

  8. Get support: Professional organisers, psychologists, coaches, and support groups are all available to help you develop organisational skills set up functional systems throughout your space to help reduce stress.

If this is something you'd like support with, reach out. There's no shame here, we've seen it all and are often excited by a new challenge to find a way to support families making life easier for themselves.
